Hosting Family for the Holidays

2016-12-14 |

The holiday season is quickly approaching, and if you’re hosting family during the next few months, keeping your house tidy can be hard. You want to spend time enjoying family and catching up, not stuck cleaning up. Two rooms in your home that will be taken over are the bathroom and bedrooms. Here are some tips on how to make the best of the spaces for guests.

Bathrooms

The traffic flow of your bathrooms can increase during the holidays. Family and friends are dropping by, coming over for parties, or gathering for dinner. Of course you want to keep your bathroom looking spotless and clean, but it can be difficult to keep up with. Here are some tips on how to keep your shower and bathroom clean:

  • Clean the shower glass with quality glass cleaners.
  • Soap scum in the tub or shower can be cleaned with white vinegar and water.
  • Use an all-purpose bathroom cleaner to spray toilet rims, seat, and tank to keep germs from spreading.
  • Dry cloths are best to use to dry all surfaces; use separate towels for separate services (don’t wipe off the sink with a towel that was used on the toilet).

Hooks and towel bars are a great way to keep towels organized and off the floor. Be sure to have enough towels on hand for guests if they don’t bring their own. If your family and guests are sharing one bathroom, create a schedule for showers so no one ends up running late and to prevent shower hogs. And a candle in a holiday scent is a nice way to freshen up the space.

Guest Bedrooms

If guests are staying over for more than a few nights, living out of a suitcase can be annoying. Clothes can get wrinkled or misplaced during the holiday rush. Investing in a closet storage system can be beneficial in guest rooms. Guests can feel free to hang up any dress clothes they don’t want ruined, and the room won’t be cluttered with clothes.

Hardware and accessories like belt, tie, and scarf racks, jewelry drawer inserts, and hooks help keep the space organized. Provide empty hangers and space for your guests to store their luggage. If guests aren’t staying in a guest bedroom but rather on a pull out couch or air mattress, provide some space in the room for them to store their belongings and let them know where they can get ready in the morning.
