His and Her Closets: Making It Work

9/20/2016 |

Sharing space with someone else can be tricky, especially when it comes to precious closet space in your home. Closets can come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes it’s a game of give and take in order to successfully compromise about who gets how much space. Couples may have to share the same closet or they may each have their own. Either way, here are some closet organization tips for his and her closets.

Clean Up The Clutter

Closets can become a catch-all for items we don’t know where to put, and with too much stuff shoved in your closet, it can affect how long it takes you to get ready in the morning. About once a year, it’s a good idea to go through all of your clothes and decide what you need and don’t need. You can donate any gently-used clothing, and this will clear up some much needed space.

Divide The Space Evenly

The running joke on home buying shows is that the wife is going to take the entire closet while the husband is stuck with a few drawers. In order to make sharing a closet work, you have to decide how much space you each get. Men and women’s wardrobes can vary, and certain items may require more space than others. For example, dresses would need to be hung higher to accommodate for length and shoe shelves would have to fit taller boots. Each of you should have enough space and know where the “middle” of the closet is.

Invest In Organization Systems

These are built-ins that can be installed in your closet to help with organization, and they can be customized to fit the space in your closet. Features include shelves, drawers, and hanging rods for your clothing and accessories. Instead of throwing clothes into your closet or hoping they’ll stay hung up, these systems allow you to easily organize and make sure everything has its place, from clothing to shoes to accessories, like handbags, belts, and scarves. Be sure to label any boxes you may have so you’re not blindly guessing what’s in each one.
